    (un)ski weekend recap

So, what was supposed to be a snowy ski/snowboarding weekend, turned into a weekend of winery hoping. 9 wineries in 2 days to be exact. (Go big or go home, right?!?) We should have gone skiing on Friday, because when we woke up Saturday morning there was a sheet of ice on the ground from the sleet we had the night before. None of us were really in the market to learn how to ski down icy slopes so we opted for the second option. Pick up where we left off on Friday and hit some more wineries.

All in all it was a great weekend. We drank wine, played games, watched movies and just enjoyed each other’s company. I wish I could get away like that more often! The cabin was beautiful, and Wintergreen Resort as a whole is wonderful. I will definitely be going back!

The boys waiting for their true BBQ at Paulie’s Pig Out, I was leery to try the food at first, but their pulled pork sandwich was pretty damn good.

What happens when you get up close and person with a cow to take a picture? Well we didn’t stick around long enough to find out, but let’s just say the whole herd started running towards the fence. oops?

A group shot at Afton Mountain Winery

in case any of you were wondering which 9 wineries we visited here’s a list below :)

    Day 1:

    Veritas Vineyard

Beautiful tasting room. I would definitely recommend visiting this one if you’re in the area. Really nice wines, balanced with nice, smooth flavors.

The love sign is made completely out of wine corks. Pretty cool, huh? Spread the love. The love for VA Wine that is!

    Afton Mountain Vineyards

Loved this winery. It just had great personality. Their wines were reasonably priced with something for everyone. There is a gorgeous pond on their property too that I’m sure on a warm spring day would make for a great afternoon.

    Cardinal Point Winery

When we first walked into the tasting room I was skeptical. It’s very small and compared to some tasting rooms I’ve been in this one was a little disappointing. Overall their wines were nice. Different, but good. They are done in a different style from most VA wine which I actually ended up really liking.

Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery

David decided to make a detour here. Wish he hadn’t. yes it’s a winery. but they don’t have any actual grape wines. It’s all strictly fruit wines which are too sweet for my liking. And the pour was so small I couldn’t hardly taste anything. Won’t be coming back anytime soon.

    Wintergreen Winery

As soon as I saw the winery sign I sorta knew this winery wasn’t going to be one of my favorites. Their wine was just “meh”. The grapes need some work because everything we tried was very one-note and I just couldn’t’ get excited about any of them.

    Day 2:

    King Family Vineyards

What a beautiful property and tasting room. I could see how someone would want to spend all day here. The tasting room is quirky and the staff was wonderful, and their wine was equally delicious. I would definitely recommend a stop here.

    Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards

This. Vineyard. Amazing. I could talk about this winery for hours. EVERYTHING was beautiful, the inside, the outside, every last detail thought about. These people are doing something right. Oh and did I mention the ridiculously large pours? I’m pretty sure all four of us had a half bottle of wine alone with the tasting. I loved most of their wines and was so sad when we had to leave. Oh and how can I forget the pizza! They have a wood fire grill in their tasting room with fresh local toppings from their farm served daily!!

    Albemarle Ciderworks

I’ve never been to a hard cider farm before, but this is supposed to be one of the best in VA so we figured why not. It was definitely different. I think it’s harder to pick out the different flavors with apples the way you can with grapes. It was a cool experience, but not something I’d want to drink everyday.

    Pollak Vineyards

Last but not least, Pollak. Another standout winery. Super knowledgeable staff and just plain good wine. I would have bought all of the bottles if I could have but David said no. I’m really glad we had a chance to come here. Their tasting room is very state of the art and modern. Another winery where I could really see spending a whole afternoon here.

and finally. this. this is how much wine we came home with. i heart vino. the end.
